The Same Skirt

Did you know that Obama wore a blue or grey suit every day while he was in office? He also ate the same thing for breakfast everyday (eggs, potatoes, wheat toast). Why? To avoid decision fatigue. To save brain power for the decisions that really matter. If you’re not deliberating over whether to wear the cream, the bone, the white, the off-white, the ivory or the beige jacket each day, your mind is free to pass health care reform or, in my case, resolve an argument between 4 year olds over a toy truck.

I doubt Donald Trump is conserving his brain power by wearing the same trucker hat daily. His mind is jumping all over the shop; red tie, ill fitting suit, grabbing by pussy, toast or cereal. Someone with a clear mind for decision making would surely not propose a travel ban or a wall.

I’m with Obama on this one (and all ones). I think I may have been a monk in a former life as the idea of wearing, doing and eating the same thing everyday sounds like bliss to me; 4am start, robe, meditation, rice, good deeds, rice, meditation, sleep. I’ve downsized my wardrobe so I basically wear the same thing most days (cue the ubiquitous denim skirt). This has been surprisingly freeing rather than restricting.

Getting rid of stuff is so satisfying! I’ve downsized so much stuff and am constantly feverishly looking around for what to give away next. The cat? The kitchen sink? Best not. Perhaps this old t-shirt, mug, DVD, book… Having less also makes you more creative with what you’ve got. Perhaps I could wear this denim skirt at a jaunty angle? Thousands of people have discovered the ease that downsizing your wardrobe brings to your life. Project 333 is the minimalist fashion challenge that invites you to dress with 33 items or less for 3 months. http://bemorewithless.com/ This featured in the awesome Minimalism; a documentary and might be my next challenge!

Foodstuffs can also benefit from the downsizing treatment. Jennifer Aniston ate the same thing for lunch everyday on the set of Friends; the big salad. I can relate as I have the same breakfast (paleo muesli and coconut yoghurt-yes cue eye rolls) and lunch (roast veg and tuna) daily. It’s makes life and shopping easy and is one (or two) less decisions to make and less wastage and time spent staring blankly in the Super Marché. And then you get straight back to running the free world or being ‘on a break’ with Ross. I vary what I eat for dinner though. I’m crazy like that!

“The things you own, end up owning you” as Tyler Durden (I’m Tyler Durden?) wisely said. So don’t let them outnumber you. Find a uniform and see how it feels. You’ll be in good cha-ching company with Steve Jobs (black turtleneck), Mark Zuckerberg (grey t-shirt), Evan Spiegel (white t-shirt) and may become a tech genius with all that extra brain power you save in the morning. Find some food you love and stick to it. I’d love to hear what you choose to wear and eat and its impact on decision fatigue. Vive la jupe en jean et le muesli!

  1. Hi Yvette. This was a interesting read. Personally I wear a uniform to work which makes it so much easier. I recently moved from the North Island to the South Island in NZ. Had a big clean out then. But decided when I moved I would turn the coat hanger backwards and when I wear them turn the coat hanger the other way, if I haven’t worn them in at least 6 months I would get rid of them. So if the coat hanger hasn’t turned, out they go to charity shops.
It’s amazing how much you accumulate over the years and what you can do with out. After moving, got rid of so much which was given to the kids as they were going flatting.
I eat the same thing at breakfast, only difference is the season where in. Porridge with fruit in winter and muesli or weetbix in the other seasons. Lunch is yoghurt and fruit. Anything goes at dinner time.
I think as I’ve got older I don’t need as much, material things or clothes.

    1. Thanks Lynette! NZ is beautiful, what a wonderful place to live. I’m glad to hear there are other people who eat and wear the same things. It’s very freeing. I might try turning my coat hangers too as even though I’ve downsized, there is always more to let go of. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment 🙏❤️

  2. An interesting read. I learnt a lot and have been checking out the link to Project 333. It would save me so much time if I could downsize my wardrobe. My other half would be very happy if I did that as he was complaining last week that it took me too long to work out what to wear to a meeting because I had too much in the wardrobe. He is right and you are right. I like Lynette’s suggestion too with the coathanger. I did try that once but didn’t stick to it, should try it again. I do eat similar food at most meals especially for breakfast and lunch, dinner more of a variety, when we are home. Look forward to your next blog – always interesting to see what you have chosen to talk about. Thank you.

    1. Thanks for reading. Streamlining your wardrobe certainly does make it a lot quicker to get out the door! I haven’t yet counted my clothes but am keen to and give project 333 a try. I find it easy to prepare my lunches for the week on the weekend and I’m yet to get sick of it but will change it if I do. I’m trying to get into a habit of regularly taking things to the op shop and the coat hangers are a good way to see what you wear or don’t. I look forward to hearing how you go with it. Thanks for commenting ❤️
