Lockdown is finally ending for us Melbournians. We can now have exposed faces outside, go to Kmart and get-on-the-beers like nature intended. Even though I’m excited about rediscovering these freedoms, I am a bit out of shape for this brave new world. I find myself shyly hiding my smile behind my hand like a geisha, feeling fatigued after a day of people -ness and getting used to wearing leg prisons again after months of tracksuits. I also have a bit of the old FOGO (fear of going out). Perhaps we can seek inspiration from how our Bear brethren come out of hibernation.
A long wake-up for bears
Black bears emerge from their dens in April, but stay lethargic for weeks. During this so-called walking hibernation, they sleep plenty and don’t roam very far. Slowly, the bears’ metabolism gears up to normal, active levels.
Keep the good
There were parts of lockdown I liked and will continue. The simple pleasures of walking, guilt free Netflix bingeing, doing Pilates in my PJ’s and watching Brett Sutton at the pressers. Well maybe I can’t do that last one but I’ll always have the memories. Oh no, they can’t take that away from me.
Slow wake up
I will baby bear step my way back into the world with lots of blank space in the calendar, quality time with friends rather than quantity time with crowds and a renewed sense of gratitude for many things I took for granted like getting my nails and hair-did, buying the good pens at Officeworks and working without a permit.
So let’s give ourselves some space and grace to shake off the lethargy and slowly warm up for a Summer of fun.
Love and light and be like the bears xxx Yvette
