Maybe those 3 year olds that test your patience by following you around asking, ‘why?….why?…but why?’ are onto something. Spectacled and sweet über-geek Simon Sinek suggests that we should always, ‘start with why’. He espouses on this simple but effective philosophy in his excellent TED talk and book of the same name. The basic premise is,
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe”. Simon Sinek
Simon believes that if we start with a clear why, a strong purpose and reason for doing what we do, then we will stay connected to and passionate about the values that underpin our life, work, relationships et al. If the why is clear and inspiring, it will guide us like a beacon even if the what and the how change.
“By WHY I mean your purpose, cause or belief – WHY does your company exist? WHY do you get out of bed every morning? And WHY should anyone care?” Simon Sinek
You can do this with anything and everything! Feeling passionate about supporting children and families is more inspiring than just ‘being a teacher’. It’s more empowering to think about eating well and exercising as being beneficial to my wellbeing rather than just for weight loss purposes.
Abraham Hicks talk about why being an important part of the law of attraction too as the big picture pulls you into alignment with your vision more quickly.
“When you talk about what you want and why you want it, there’s usually less resistance within you than when you talk about what you want and how you’re going to get it. When you pose questions you don’t have answers for, like how, where, when, who, it sets up a contradictory vibration that slows everything down”. Abraham Hicks
Motivational speaker and author Dean Graziosi talks about going ‘7 Levels Deep’ by asking yourself ‘why’ 7 times so you can get to the real deeper reason why.
“I think when you get deeper and find the root of your why, you will be stronger simply because you are clearer on the purpose behind your actions, and more motivated, especially in challenging times”. -Dean Graziosi
This could well have been inspired by a 3-year-old as it goes a little something like this;
- ‘Why are you are teacher?’ Because I’m passionate about supporting children and families.
- Why are you passionate about supporting children and families? Because I want to be part of building a kind community.
- Why do you want to be part of building a kind community? Because…and so on…and so on until you’ve asked ‘why’ 7 times. You can do your own ‘7 whys’ here…http://www.7levelsdeep.com/
Do you know your why? Why is that?

Thankyou for your writings Y…..💕
I do oft find myself pondering why for the hardships but need to more for the blessings.
