Healing

Sometimes when it rains it pours. I had a piece of skin near my eye removed as it was BCC*. I had stitches and a bandage like a partial pirate. I felt a bit flat and looked a bit odd. I took antibiotics to ward off infection for that, had my flu shot, got a sniffle and a sore throat and was PMS-ing like nobody’s bloody (ha-ha) business. I had to admit it, I was a mess. And not even a hot mess due to Melbourne’s plummeting weather temperatures.

I like to stick to a routine of exercise and positivity and accepting all offers for relief teaching but I had to accept that hibernation and quarantine were what was required. I tried not to feel guilty about the volume of TV I was consuming, the amount of sleep I was having, or the cost of the heating I was using.  I had to take a dose of my own metaphorical medicine and trust my body knew how to heal itself.

Our lives flow in cycles like the seasons and it was the winter of my discontent** internally and externally. Slowly the fog lifted and the sniffle slowed and I had the stitches out and now am a very neatly scarred partial pirate. I’m aiming to get better at surrendering to the seasons, not going on a guilt trip for things left undone and accepting the rain ‘cos it makes the rainbow more vivid.

So dear reader, please get your skin and moles checked and tune into your needs as the body has the infinite wisdom to heal itself and who are we to question its methods (albeit 3 seasons of Nashville and 10 hours sleep). And I couldn’t mention scar without including this piece of catchy Missy Higgins lyrical goodness…

And doesn’t that sound familiar? Doesn’t that hit too close to home?
Doesn’t that make you shiver; the way things could’ve gone?
And doesn’t it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?***

  1. So pleased that you went and had the piece of skin near your eye checked and then removed especially as it was a BCC. It was certainly in a difficult place and understandable that it takes quite a will to recover from it. I have had a lot of skin cancers removed over the years (but not in a spot as near to my eye as your’s was) and hadn’t realised that it was due to sunbaking as a teenager on the beach many many years before. Thank you for another very informative blog.
